Greetings!

October brings some of the finest weather in Santa Cruz. The summer fog that can make mornings & evenings so chilly finally evaporates and leaves us with warm, crisp, sunny days.

October is also time for the annual Santa Cruz Open Studios Art Tour, which means I will be cleaning up the shop, bringing pieces home from the galleries, and finishing up new works. I hope you have a chance to visit me in my shop, as well as some of the many other artists who will be exhibiting over those weekends.

Enjoy!

Matt
Open Studios Art Tour
Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County

The Open Studios Art Tour takes place the first three weekends in October. From the redwoods to the sea, thousands of art enthusiasts visit with artists in their studios to see the creative process at work.Cultural Council logo

I have been participating in Open Studios since 2000, & I value it as a chance to interact directly with people as they view & appreciate my work. I will be open for the second 2 weekends, October 11 & 12, and October 18 & 19, between the hours of 11am & 6pm. Work will be available for sale, I will be available to discuss commissioned work, & as always, it costs nothing to visit the shop & view my work.

The Open Studios Art Tour is a self-guided tour with 300 studios open throughout Santa Cruz County. Art Tour information is available through the 15-month Artist Guide/Calendar, a Preview Exhibit at the Santa Cruz Art League, & on the Cultural Council's website. The museum-quality, 15-month Artist Guide/Calendar, available for $20 at more than 50 locations in Santa Cruz County, includes a map of Open Studios Locations & contact information for each artist. Calendar sales benefit local arts & arts learning programs.

I look forward to seeing you then!

  New Work: Panda Bears

panda bearI think the inspiration to work with Panda Bears came while watching the Beijing Olympics this summer.

The distinctive patterns of panda bear fur can be imitated by using ebony & holly, with a few touches of shading to plump the bears up a bit.

I made a triptych of panda bears in various poses which is currently on display at the Marquetry Show (until 16 October) at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California. Click on the image at left to see the entire piece.

Panda bears were previously thought to be closely related to the racoon family, but more recent DNA studies have shown that they are in fact true bears & therefore part of the Ursidae family.

These Panda Bear panels are for sale & can be brought home as part of your family!

I Was Blogged...
... & I Didn't Feel a Thing!

Furnitude
I recently discovered a blog about handcrafted furniture called Furnitude, which describes itself as, "A blog about handmade furniture by someone who makes it." Excited to find a forum that discussed the kind of work that I love to make, I dashed off an email with some comments about one of the makers featured in the blog.

Chickadee Bed detail
I was flattered & pleased to see that the next blog entry featured a review of some of my own work, including the Chickadee Bed shown here. I'd like to thank Mitch for the review, & encourage my viewers to spend a little time at Furnitude. I especially enjoyed the section Design Blogs I Love, which blasted me into a whole 'nother region of time-sucking hyperspace I hadn't visited before.

So check it out, & tell Mitch I sent you.
Thanks for viewing my newsletter. With Open Studios coming up fast, I didn't have time to do a piece on technique, so I'll do my best to bring that section back next month. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

I appreciate it when people forward my newsletter to others who may be interested.

If you would like me to stop sending this newsletter, just follow the SafeUnsubscribe button at the bottom of this email.

Best Wishes,
