Greetings!

The Open Studios Art Tour in October was a phenomenal success - at least in terms of visitation. Over the course of two weekends, more than 1,000 people came to my shop. Seeing that many people makes my head spin, and I come out of it feeling ever more appreciative of what the galleries do, presenting this work to the public every day of the year.

This month I want to profile a gallery that has been showing my work since they first opened - Dovetail Collection in Healdsburg, CA. I also have a page in a book that just came out, and I'll offer some tips on keeping woodwork looking fresh.

As I told people during Open Studios, if you know anyone needing fine woodworking, I always appreciate referrals. And don't forget that I do cabinetry too.

Enjoy!

Matt

Handcrafted  Furniture in the Sonoma Wine Country

Chickadee Music StandNestled in the heart of the Sonoma wine region, Dovetail Collection is a gem of a gallery specializing in fine woodworking, with a complimentary showing of art glass and jewelry. Its an hour north of San Francisco, and just past the reach of urban sprawl and clutter. When I travel north on 101, I always feel that Healdsburg is the place where Northern California wildness begins.

Run by a discerning and finely-tuned couple, Pat and Steve Kirkish, Dovetail is currently showing my Chickadee Music Stand, along with several other recent pieces.

Dovetail Collection will be hosting a Holiday Open House on 28 November in conjunction with Healdsburg's big holiday party. They'll have refreshments on hand, and a few strolling artists to visit with. That's the day after Thanksgiving, so what better way to work off a few extra calories than to do a lazy art stroll through Healdsburg. More info at healdsburg.com.

The book is sent to galleries, art consultants, and designers around the country. If you know someone who you think would appreciate a copy, let me know and I'll see that they get one.

Hand-Rubbed Mineral Oil
Easy Way to Freshen Up a Finish

Several times I have had the opportunity and honor to refurbish pieces made by the Japanese-American furnituremaker, George Nakashima. On one occasion I called the Nakashima shop, which is still in operation, and asked the late-maker's daughter, Mira Nakashima, about what finishes were used. She told me that the last thing to go on all Nakashima furniture was a hand-rubbed coating of mineral oil. I have since found that this is a great way to freshen up a piece of woodwork.

rubbing mineral oilI use mineral oil from the local pharmacy because it is generally cheaper than the stuff sold in hardware stores. The intended use is as a laxative, so it must be safe to use as a furniture polish.

I use a cotton rag and rub a generous amount into the wood. Then I take a clean rag and rub off all the excess, always rubbing with the grain wherever possible. And that's all there is to it. Gives the wood a nice warm glow. For more pics, go to the Process page of my website.
That's all for now. Next month I'll present a few handcrafted gift ideas (scrabble boards, guitar stands, letter boxes), in keeping with the season.
