I delivered several pieces for the Grand Opening Show, which runs from May to July 2008. The gallery is associated with William Ng Woodworks, an established woodworking school.

I'm excited to have my work seen in Southern California. If you are in the area, please stop in and visit the beautiful new space. And tell them I sent you!

A Birthday Present Mirror

Some of my clients know exactly what they want, while others take longer to decide. This client falls into the former category. She loved my hummingbird design and asked me to add some fuchsia flowers, and I was happy to oblige. The mirror was a gift from her husband in honor of her 60th birthday. Happy Birthday R.L.!

What is Marquetry?
A Truly Ancient Art

sunflower
Marquetry is the assembly of thin slices of wood to form an image. Its like painting with wood, using only naturally colored woods. Shading is achieved by dipping inlay pieces in hot sand and scorching them.

This marquetry technique is ancient, stretching all the way back to Egypt 3,000 years ago, and was developed to great depth during the European Renaissance. It is detail-oriented, and time consuming, yet it is my favorite aspect of the work I do. It is so satisfying to slowly see the imagery come into view.

In case you are wondering, this sunflower is a test piece for a commission I am just starting on. Look for the finished piece in this newsletter in a month or two.
