GREENSPACE
A Local Store Specializing in Green Products

Mostly my work is shown in galleries that specialize in fine woodworking. Greenspace is different in that it carries a wide variety of green products for homes and businesses. Lately I've been using it as a source for green finishes.

So when Lydia, the owner, invited me to hang some of my marquetry mirrors on the walls, I jumped at the chance. Its great to have some of my work shown locally. Plus I am eager to develop the synergies between my woodwork and the green products that Greenspace provides.

Stop by and visit when you get a chance. Its an education.

New Work
Chickadee Music Stand

mirror detail
Its always a delight to get a call from someone who visited my shop during the Open Studios Art Tour and who has kept my work in mind for months, sometimes even years, before finally coming back to ask me to make something for themselves. This time the request came from a retired professor who had admired a similar music stand of mine, and who came to my shop to select the woods and discuss the design. His choice for the background wood was most appropriate, and I hope the piece gives him joy for many years to come.

If you click on the image, it will take you to a series of photos on my website that show some steps in the process of making this piece.

Low VOC Finishes
Changing the Way Wood is Finished

Growing awareness of the environmental damage caused by volatile organic compounds (VOC) has lead to radical changes in wood finish chemistry. VOC's have traditionally served as solvents to keep the solids that form the actual finish in solution long enough to make it easy to apply.  Then they quickly evaporate, polluting the air. Small amounts of VOC solvents may continue to release after the woodwork has entered the home, and these can cause health problems.

There are many new low or no VOC finishes available on the market. One that I've been quite happy with is OSMO Polyx-Oil, a blend of oils and waxes with the barest minimum of VOC solvents to keep the mix in solution.  It was recommended by a customer with chemical sensitivities who said it is one of the few she can tolerate. This and other low VOC finishes are available at Greenspace locally (see above).
