Greetings! Spring is in the air, and that's not the only good news to report.
One, I have a new and interesting project in the shop, and two, our Santa Cruz Woodworkers group has a tentative date for an exhibit at the Museum of Art & History. Details below.
Enjoy!

Many Hands GalleryCapitola, California
I guess you could call this my hometown gallery, since it is the only local gallery I use to show my work. Although the gallery has been around for almost 20 years, it came under new ownership several years ago, and Lauren Warwick has done a fantastic job updating the space and giving it a more refined feel.
The gallery is currently featured in a 1-minute TV spot narrated by Romney Dunbar (who also does the "Travels with Romney" show) which you can view online here. You'll see one of my music stands in the background, and there is also a view of a magnolia blossom on the lid of one of my boxes.
Nice folks, and a great selection of local artwork in a variety of media. Plus, they are located next door to Gayle's Bakery (the lovely aromas wafting from that eatery make my head spin whenever I visit the gallery). When you stop in and visit, mention that you read about the gallery here.

New Works: Barn Swallows
I am in the early stages with this project so not a lot to show yet. I'll be making panels for a pair of doors that will conceal an office niche in a new home in Sonoma County. The new house is a rammed earth structure using the more modern PISE method. You can read about this interesting project here.
These will be the largest panels I've made to date, and I'll be using some tricks for working with large panels that I recently learned from my marquetry teacher, Greg Zall.
Lately I've been moonlighting producing print ads. In the process I've gained basic skills using Adobe Illustrator, so I am using the program to design the panels. This way I can refine the design on the computer, and when ready, have it printed out full scale on a blueprint printer. Here is the design as I have it to date....a rowdy flock of barn swallows dashing through the branches of an old apple tree.
I did a sample panel of 2 barn swallows in flight as practice. Next step is to find the right piece of western maple to use for the background. I'll resaw it into veneers, and then dive into the marquetry. Along the way I'll take some photos of the "Zall Method" for doing marquetry on large panels, and have a report for you next time.

Save This Date! 8 July 2011
I know its a ridiculously long way off, but the news is exciting enough that I have to share.
The Museum of Art & History has offered to host a 4 month Santa Cruz Woodworkers Exhibition. The show will be housed in the Solari Gallery, a large, spacious exhibit hall on the museum's second floor. The exhibit will open on July 8, 2011 with a reception, and run through mid-November. Santa Cruz Woodworkers is a fledgling group of an even dozen local wood artists. The 2-year window gives us plenty of time to envision and craft an exhibit that will push the boundaries of what each of us are capable of. More news to follow! |
