Dear Friends,
Although its been two months since my last email blast, its not for lack of news. In February I taught 2 classes at the William Ng School of Fine Woodworking. Check out photos from the classes here.
Since then I've been focused on a large commissioned project with a marine theme. See my progress report below.
In addition, there is a big sale underway at the Dovetail Collection in Healdsburg, and I have a new ETSY storefront.
Read on, dear reader!

This Just In: "Great Results, Expert, Creative"
Those are just some of the kind words I received in an endorsement written by a client. She writes, "I hired Matt to do a set of 2 custom sliding panels for my home in 2009. The results are incredible. The beauty of the wood grains and their depth of colors are amazing, let alone how he managed to blend the marquetry so perfectly. For
instance, ..."

Dovetail Collection: Amazing Sale! Dovetail
Collection, one of my favorite galleries up in Healdsburg, is having an Amazing Sale.
They have great deals on art glass, artisan jewelry, and really beautiful pieces
of furniture, including a few pieces of mine! If you can make it up to
Healdsburg, I recommend you take a look. You can also see most of their
furniture pieces online at their website, including my Koi Fish Table.
Koi Fish Table |
Gallery hours: Thursday through Monday from 11am to 5pm. Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment. Also, call or email in advance to see the furniture in their
warehouse/annex. Tell the owners, Pat and Steve Kirkish, that I sent you.

New Project: ETSY
In my continuing efforts to create a line of products that are gift-worthy and more affordable than my larger furniture-scale pieces, I recently set up an Etsy storefront. Etsy is...well, according to wikipedia, "Etsy is a social commerce website
focused on handmade or vintage items."
My friend and neighbor Clay Austin shot some of my pieces in natural surroundings. I'm presenting them in my Etsy storefront as "Handcrafted Objects Inspired by Rambles in Nature."
Koi Letter Holder, 6" x 6" x 3"
| My plan is to gradually expand the offerings, with nothing costing more than a couple hundred bucks, and with many items costing less. Not masterworks perhaps, but affordable items that uniquely convey the woodworking and marquetry arts that I practice and espouse.
Take a look at the site and please let me know what you think. It's a work in progress and your feedback is appreciated.

Work in Progress: Marine Scene
I am currently knee deep in a commissioned work that is taking me underwater. Not literally, but the subject is an underwater marine scene. Each panel is 2' by 5' with lots of interesting and challenging detail. The challenge is to break each panel into smaller units, small enough to allow me to do the inlay work, and then piece the whole thing back together like a huge puzzle.
The example below shows one portion of a panel, divided into 4 pieces, then reunited during assembly.
Ultimately these panels will form the backs of a pair of glass display cabinets, which will house a precious collection of tropical shells, lit with state-of-the-art LED lighting.
So far I am keeping my head above water. Hopefully I will have photos of the finished cabinets to show in the near future. For now, click on the images to see a larger version on my website.

New Works: Flamingo Triptych
Flamingo Wall Panels | A set of 3 wall panels, each roughly 17" x 20", portraying a flock of flamingos taking flight. Only 2 marquetry woods were necessary - carob and ebony. The panels are of bigleaf maple with wenge trim. They currently reside on my living room wall, and I like them enough that they may stay there awhile longer (although a reasonable offer will be considered).
