Greetings!

Our Santa Cruz Woodworkers exhibit is in place, and we've added a Meet the Artists Reception for this Friday. Details below.

Matt

Santa Cruz Woodworkers
Exhibit in the Rittenhouse Building

first friday bannerOur exhibit is in place and ready for viewing in the new Rittenhouse Building, on the corner of Pacific and Church, in downtown Santa Cruz.

On Friday (Dec. 4) we will gather for a community meet-and-greet at Motiv on Pacific Avenue as part of the First Friday Art Tour. MOTIV is just a block down the street, at 1209 Pacific, and we'll be there from 5 to 7pm. Come visit, partake of the wine and hors d'oeuvres, and let us know what you think of our new exhibit.

Also, check today's Sentinel to read Wallace Baines' nice write-up about the exhibit.

Shop Local
Get Good Karma

Local biz needs local support to thrive. And support means spending dollars locally. Because you can't run a business on good karma alone.

This holiday season I've placed gift-worthy smaller items in 2 local venues: Greenspace, and Many Hands Gallery.

Greenspace logoI love the business philosophy at Greenspace, "a unique retail showroom and education center specializing in green products for the home and business. We focus on providing products and services that lighten our impact on the earth and improve our health and well being."

Show some love by shopping there, and by letting others know what you liked.
Did You Know?
Update on Holly...

Toyon leaves and fruitIn my last newsletter I mentioned some holly that I had received, and went on to conjecture that holly was the source of the name Hollywood. A reader wrote to suggest that Hollywood actually derives its name from the Toyon bush (Heteromeles arbutifolia), a California native that has red berries similar to holly, and was thus known as California Holly.

American Holly is a different species all-together (Ilex opaca), native to the eastern US, and so unlikely to have been the name-source for a city in California. American holly is now widely planted as an ornamental, which is how I managed to get a piece of it.

pandaThis panda is a good example of how useful holly is in the marquetry work I do. For this piece I used holly for the white fur, ebony for the dark fur, and a few other bits for the bamboo. Click on the image for a photo of the full set of panda panels.

Happy Holidays!
