Greetings!

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Now that we have turned the corner into the holiday season, I offer up some smaller items that might prove suitable as gifts.

I think we are all being more careful with our spending these days. Now more than ever is a good time to make purchases count by looking for well-made things imbued with love and care by the person who crafted them. And maybe even giving some gifts made by your own hands. There is a specialness in that which can't be bought.

And as always, take time to appreciate the beauty around you.

Enjoy!

Once A Tree Gallery
Anaheim, California

William Ng has been teaching Fine Woodworking for years at his school in Anaheim. This year he opened a showcase gallery for fine woodwork next door to the school. At William's invitation, I went down in May to drop off a few pieces and take a look at the new space. William is an affable guy, and seems to have a crew of inspired volunteers surrounding him willing to do whatever they can do to help his vision of a Fine Woodworking Gallery come to life.

I'll be teaching some classes at the William Ng school in August of the coming year. Check the school's online schedule of classes for more information.

New Works: Scrabble Boards

scrabbleI made about 8 of these custom scrabble boards for a client to give as gifts to his friends and family last winter. I devised a way to 'mass produce' them by gluing up bundles of sticks and slicing off the endgrain. Clicking on the scrabble board will take you to a process page that shows how I did that.

Traditional scrabble boards use different colored squares to indicate scoring. I had to find a way to indicate scoring using different wood colors. I used carob for pink (double-word score), and jarrah for red (triple word score). Blues are not available in wood, so I used walnut to represent double letter scoring, and wenge for triple letter scoring. The remaining squares are ash, outlined in walnut, and with a carob square in the center containing an ebony star. The whole is framed in jarrah, with walnut and holly stringing, with the  entire board set into a cherry frame.

I have two scrabble boards on hand, and can make larger orders for those who are interested. These make a truly unique gift.
New Works: Guitar Stands

guitar standsI have had several inquiries for guitar stands over the years, and finally had a chance to design and build several this year with help from my apprentice Ben. The stands are designed to hold an acoustic dreadnought-style guitar, and can be custom-designed to accommodate other styles as well. The guitar hangs from the headstock on a padded yoke. A very stylish way to safely display your axe in the practice room. Current versions are available in walnut or heavily-figured blue-gum eucalyptus. Other woods available on request. You provide the guitar!
New Works: Keeping Boxes

Koi BoxThese boxes have been popular this year. Small boxes (8" x 12" x 3" deep) with felt-lined bottoms that display some of my signature marquetry work on the lid. The koi fish inlay has been especially popular, but I have several other motifs as well. I call them Keeping Boxes because you can keep 'stuff' in them, but they have also been called Letter Boxes and Jewelery Boxes. I just make them...you can describe them as you wish!
This will be my final newsletter for 2008. Please send me an email with any ideas for what you would like to see in this newsletter in the new year.

Hoping you and yours have a safe and satisfying holiday season.

Best Wishes,
